Congresswoman's Bold Tax Proposal: Black Americans Bid Farewell to IRS Payments in Divisive Equity Pitch

Congresswoman's Bold Tax Proposal: Black Americans Bid Farewell to IRS Payments in Divisive Equity Pitch

(Chaz Anon) In the latest twist that could only spawn from the fever dreams of our political circus, Jasmine Crockett, a rookie congresswoman hailing from the Lone Star State, has floated a scheme that’s bound to have Uncle Sam doing double-takes. Picture this: a tax holiday, but not for everyone—just for Black Americans.

It’s her fresh spin on the age-old, thorny debate of reparations, a concept that's had academics and politicos in a tangle over how to settle the historical tab for slavery's brutal legacy. But here’s the kicker, in a moment of honesty that’s as rare as a unicorn in this political landscape, Crockett concedes the snag in her plan—many of the folks she’s aiming to help are barely brushing shoulders with the taxman to begin with.

It’s a proposal that’s as provocative as it is problematic, slicing right through the heart of America’s endless wrestling match with its own history.

In an interview with The Black Lawyers Podcast last week, Crockett argued that reparations in some form are necessary.

“So many black folk, not only do you owe for the labor that was stolen and killed, and all the other things, but the fact is we end up being so far behind,” the representative told her host.

She recalled a celebrity talking about making black people tax-exempt, and thought, “I don’t know that that’s … necessarily a bad idea.”

“One of the things they propose is black folk not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time because … that puts money back in your pocket,” Crockett explained.

According to the representative, the idea “may not be as objectionable to some people,” referring to the American taxpayers who would pay the balance to be made up when such an exemption is extended, as “actually giving out dollars.”

The biggest problem with the proposal is that many black people already aren’t paying taxes and would not, therefore, be eligible to receive reparations.
