Stunning Video: Dolphins Swimming in Bioluminescent Waters From California to Acapulco
(Chaz Anon) Amazing Video taken in Newport Beach on Wednesday captured a display of light more impressive than anything Disneyland can come up with, as dolphins swam through bioluminescent waters.
From the beaches of Acapulco to the coastal shores of Orange County, California, beach-going locals and photographers have been sharing dazzling images of waves lit up with a striking and somewhat eerie neon blue glow, and now we this video of natures power to amaze.
The rare phenomenon, also known as sea sparkle, can sometimes happen when rains bring a coastal red tide that carries tiny bioluminescent organisms up to the surface.
During the day, the algal bloom appears as a deep-red, rusty tide due to the heavy concentration of small photosynthetic organisms floating up to the surface. When the sun goes down, however, movements such as crashing waves make the organisms display light.
The organisms, bioluminescent phytoplankton, flicker from the movement of surrounding water, producing bursts of light that can be seen in waves crashing on the shores or water hitting the sides of boats.
Local photographer Patrick Coyne filmed the stunning display, calling it one of the most magical nights of his life.
